South Africa Trip

29 Aug

South Africa was amazing. Before we came, I kept saying to myself, “this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip” over and over again. I always thought I’d travel to a continent like Europe before traveling somewhere as far away and exotic as Africa. Then after planning this trip, I thought I better make the most of it because I’d probably never come back. I was wrong. I would come back in a heartbeat. Without getting too mushy and overzealous, I’d rank some of THE top moments of my life here.

Seeing wild animals up close is so amazing that it’s hard to put into words, but a few that I think of are crazy, incredible, and even spiritual. On day one of our safari, the first thing we saw was a large herd of buffalo. We sat in our jeep just a few feet away from these massive creatures. Our engine was turned off and the buffalo were grazing and walking, not paying any attention to us.

There were a few baby buffalo who stayed close to their mothers at all times. We sat there for 20 minutes or maybe 2 hours in absolute silence. There weren’t even any birds chirping or crickets. Just silence. Out of the blue, my eyes started tearing up. I felt so small and content.

Then I felt silly because who knew buffalo would bring me to tears.

This was the first of many spiritual experiences on my trip. Thanks for letting me share.

Photo Credit: I cannot take credit for these pictures. I sat in the jeep and watched the animals with my mouth open while my family snapped amazing pictures. Theses come from the cameras of my father-in-law and husband.

I’m so glad you had a wonderful trip. Those pictures are definitely frameworthy. Your husband and father-in-law get a gold star for their fabulous photography. Did you try any exotic foods?

    I’m assuming you ate no buffalo… 😉

Glad the trip went well. Sounds like a blast!

We did eat impala, yellowfin, ostrich, and maybe kudu. We had a great time with you and Ryan.

    Monkeys are the best !

Can I request now to print some of these pictures for a nursery someday? They are so amazing! I’m glad you got to go but also glad you’re home. Maybe when Ryan is working there someday and we’re empty nesters, we’ll come out to visit. 🙂
